Since the initial release of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 we’ve not seen many leaked OS’ for it. Some arrived before launch but after that, only one OS. The last was OS 6.0.0.161 which was not all that great and left a lot to be desired for in new Torch owners. Now, we have a new build to check out. OS 6.0.0.214 has leaked online. If any of you all are going to brave the installation then of course, be sure to back up your data.

*OS Disclaimer – Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you’re comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base – do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). Follow the links below for more information and instructions. *

Viewsonic was showing off their first Android tablet, the Viewpad 7, at IFA this week and we got to spend some quality hands-on time with the device. What I found was a pretty remarkable first effort from Viewsonic, but the Viewpad 7 will not be able to take on the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Android tablets are quickly being divided into two main categories. Those with cellular radios (more expensive) and those without (like the WiFi-only Archos lineup). Both the Viewpad 7 and Galaxy Tab feature 7-inch displays and support for cellular networks, so they will be directly competing against each other.

When you buy an Android tablet in the U.S. with support for 3G/4G, it will be subsidized by the carrier and attached to a 2-year contract with data plan. This means that the initial price of the device might not be that important because it is the 24 months of payments that make up the majority of the total cost of ownership.

So how do the two tablets compare when placed side by side?

The Viewpad 7 features a slower processor (600 MHz ARM11 vs 1 GHz Cortex A8), lower resolution display (800×480 vs 1024×600), less internal storage (512 MB vs 16/32 GB), and lacks support for Flash Player 10.1.

Viewsonic didn’t make a bad device, but I can’t think of one advantage it offers over the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

There is still hope for Viewsonic because I got the feeling someone at the company has a passion for Android and an understanding for the current industry. It was good to hear that Viewsonic worked with Google to achieve official certification (Google apps and Android Market pre-installed) and they went with the latest Android 2.2. The Viewpad 7 might not move a lot of units, but I’m curious to see what future efforts will produce.

Other impressions of the Viewpad 7 include:

Viewsonic kept saying it had a 600 MHz Snapdragon processor, but the CPU in the Viewpad 7 is ARM11 based. I’m not aware of any Snapdragons that are not ARM Cortex-A8, so I’m not sure what’s up. We were told this device could not support Flash 10.1 for “technical limitations”, which leads us to believe this is not really a Snapdragon.

The case design makes it look like a giant iPhone 4 and the Viewpad 7 was pretty heavy.

Some 3D games like Raging Thunder 2 were playable, but I don’t expect this CPU/GPU would be able to handle any of the Gameloft HD titles.

Software was very buggy. Several of the benchmarks I tried running would not complete and produced force close errors.

The virtual keyboard was terrible. It only supported a T9 layout when in portrait mode and you had to swap to landscape to see the QWERTY layout. The stock Android keyboard was not present in the test build they had installed.

Accelerometer controls did not work properly – they were off 90 degrees.

It was impossible to wipe off the fingerprints from the back casing. It also appeared to scratch easily.

I didn’t notice any haptic feedback from the touch capacitive buttons. Speaking of the touch buttons, Viewsonic used some non-standard icons that were confusing to identify.

Check out our hands-on video for additional details. Would anyone out there choose the Viewpad 7 when the Galaxy Tab will be available at the same time?

That’s right, Netgear — Roku’s expanding its platform to third parties. We don’t know if these two devices are standalones or designed to work together, but we’re guessing they’re standalones; the Netgear unit might blend in some of the Digital Entertainer line’s support for local playback and services like PlayOn, YouTube, and CinemaNow. Of course, the big question is going to be price, since if these are substantially more thatn the Apple TV’s 99 they’re going to have to offer some major features, but we should be finding out what’s up soon enough: the confidentiality on these docs lifts October 23.

Samsung just grew its Bada line with a low-end foil to the original Wave, the so-called Wave 723 — and we just happened to catch it hanging out tucked away in a distributor’s booth at IFA this week. Though the leather-grain flip cover is a classy touch, make no mistake that this one is destined for the bottom bits of the full-touch featurephone market segment thanks to a middle-of-the-road TFT LCD that looks pretty washed out and low-res compared to the Wave’s Super AMOLED (interestingly, the 723 is the first Bada phone to use version 1.1 of the platform, whose major addition is support for auto-scaling between multiple resolutions). We were also surprised at how poorly responsive the screen was to touches and swipes; we even thought for a moment that it might be resistive, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Then again, 802.11n support ain’t bad, and Samsung certainly seems as committed to Bada as ever, so we imagine they’ll sell a few. Hit up the gallery!

A few months ago, Twitter announced that they had acquired Tweetie and the web (I refuse to use the word “blogosphere” because it is a stupid word) exploded with predictions that they had effectively killed off the market for 3rd party Twitter applications by offering a free alternative.

With the release of Twitter as a universal app that now includes iPad support (read the official announcement here) I feel confident to say that the reports of the death of 3rd party Twitter applications has been greatly exaggerated.

The UI for Twitter for iPad is, without question, unlike any other Twitter application that we’ve seen. Opinions around the TUAW offices on whether this difference is “awesome” or “an abomination.” I definitely range towards the latter end of the scale, and judging by most of the comments of people that I follow on Twitter, the initial reaction is definitely one of “too busy” and “over designed.”

This is in sharp contrast to Twitterrific which just released a major update for the iPad and iPhone where they made dramatic simplifications to the app, while retaining the most important features for the most users.
Ever wish there was just an easier way to check in to the location you are at via Foursquare then to have to open the application and search for it via your devices keyboard? Well, the folks over at Vlingo (see our full review) are always looking to push the envelope on user experience and constantly look for ways to make things easier, and they have done it again. With the recent update to the Vlingo application, users can now use speech to check in to locations, shout out to friends, as well as find out the location of their friends all through some very simple voice commands.

Previously the application supported use of Twitter and Facebook, so the addition of Foursquare is one that will be welcomed by many. Now that checking in is just that much easier, let all your friends know your currently location or shout out to them, just because you can without having to use the devices keyboard. Check after the jump for the full presser and video of the update in action.

Steve Jobs looked good at today’s event, which was attended by Steve Wozniak. Steve J. did a nice shout-out to his “partner in crime” at the beginning of the presentation.

Jobs announced that there are now 300 Apple Retail Stores in 10 countries, with new stores opening in Spain soon. The Apple Stores get more than 1 million visitors combined on some days — the primary reason why the company dropped their presence at Macworld Expo.

Other stats — 120,000,000 iOS devices, 230,000 new iOS activations per day (not including updates), 6.5 billion downloads from the App Store, 250,000 apps on the App Store.

iOS 4.1 will be out next week, featuring fixes for the proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G issues. There will also be support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos, the ability to upload HD video to other devices (Apple TV) over WiFi (this is known as AirPlay), 99¢ TV show rentals, and GameCenter. The latter will bring a new level of interactive gaming to the platform.

In November, we’ll see iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The high foot traffic is translating into new customers for Apple, as Jobs declared that 50 percent of Macs sold in the retail operation are to first-time buyers of Apple computers.

Apple opened three stores this year, in London, Paris and Shanghai, bringing the number of retail outlets to 300 in 10 countries (U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy Japan, Australia, China and Switzerland). The stores aren’t just retail operations; Apple also conducts training and support sessions in the stores. Jobs stated that Apple is now conducting 80,000 “one on one” Mac training sessions each week, and has turned its stores into more than just retail operations with the Genius Bar for support and these training sessions. People view them as an “experience” central to the brand.

Today, Motorola announced the MILESTONE 2 to the European, GSM-loving masses. The MILESTONE 2 is, for lack of a better description, the DROID 2… sort of. Like the D2 here in the States, the device has a 1 GHz processor, 5 megapixel shooter with 720p video recording, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3G mobile hotspot capabilities, Flash 10.1, DLNA support, and Android 2.2. Unlike the DROID Deuce, the MILESTONE will have the full MOTOBLUR experience pre-loaded and a GSM radio on-board. The MILESTONE 2 will ship with an 8 GB micro-SD card and will be available begining in Q4 of 2010 across the pond. We’ve got the full press release ready for you after the bounce.

Motorola MILESTONE™ 2 Gives You More for all your Smartphone Needs

BASINGSTOKE, September 1, 2010 –– Motorola today introduced MILESTONE™ 2 enhanced with MOTOBLUR™. The Android™ 2.2 device offers more speed, more connectivity, more messaging, more storage, more web with Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1, more multimedia and more personalisation than the original award-winning MILESTONE.

The powerhouse device features a 1Ghz processor, allowing users to sift through their content quickly, even when running multiple applications simultaneously or a number of open web browser pages. Respond to e-mails or texts quickly with an improved and more spacious QWERTY keyboard including larger keys and better tactility for easier typing. MILESTONE 2 also acts as a 3G mobile hotspot1 to connect up to five WiFi® enabled devices, so you turn practically anywhere into a hive of productivity.

The XBMC project is progressing extremely slowly and it can be seen in the development time of the first beta of XBMC 10.0 that took nine months to arrive. However, the first beta of the new version Dharma sports a new support for add-ons. This brings the PLAF to XBMC and improves it further.

The XBMC about page describes it as,

XBMC is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub for digital media. XBMC is available for Linux, OSX, Windows, and the original Xbox. Created in 2003 by a group of like minded programmers, XBMC is a non-profit project run and developed by volunteers located around the world. More than 50 software developers have contributed to XBMC, and 100-plus translators have worked to expand its reach, making it available in more than 30 languages.

With the new feature of add-ons; scriptwriters, skin developers and designers can create custom UI on the XBMC media manager. The new add-on system also features an automatic update feature and XBMC has already received an overwhelming response from developers.

Other significant changes in the latest version includes better 64 bit support, better WebM support and support for hardware acceleration of video playback. The version in question is a beta 1 and users are strictly advised to back up their profile before proceeding with the installation.

The lack of a good media manager in Linux makes XBMC the undoubted unanimous champion. It has been almost a year since the last stable release and hopefully, we will see the final version by this year-end.

Remember when the folks at HTC made a special Android 2.2 upgrade patch for EVO 4G owners who had upgraded to a leaked build of Froyo found on the Internet? Yeah, Motorola isn’t doing that. Via their support forums, Motorola has stated:

WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version.

So, if you upgraded your handset early — and feel you need the official goodies when they become available in “early September”– it might be a good time to start researching how to flash your device back to the official Android 2.1 build that your DROID X shipped with. If you don’t care which version of 2.2 your DX is running– like we don’t — then good for you.

“Mozilla has announced a new alpha release of its Fennec mobile browser for Android and the Nokia N900. Fennec offers support for add-ons and has tight integration with Firefox Sync, a browser synchronization service that was formerly called Weave. The support for Firefox Sync is arguably Fennec’s killer feature, especially because Mozilla is planing to include the synchronization features out-of-the-box in Firefox 4.
A few days ago we saw the G2 testing ROM leak, which brought to light a rather interesting new find, widget support in an updated version of Google Voice. Well, many of us were looking for a link, sadly it didn’t appear to be just that easy, but that has all changed. Links seem to be flooding the web of locations to download this updated Google Voice onto your device today. If you want to test out the new version, you can download it directly right here. Reports are that it is working great with the exception of the phone dialer button on Sense ROMs, due to the difference in integration, and this coming from a leak, not being an official update. Be sure to check it out, and jump in the forums and let us know what you think! Thanks to 0mie and everyone else who sent this in.

It’s no secret that Google sees the browser as a central part of future computing devices. The Chrome OS is just one of the many manifestations of this particular vision of the future. In Chrome OS, the browser (Google Chrome) is used to do everything from listening to music to editing documents and creating spreadsheets.

While Chrome OS based devices are still a few months away, Google is working hard to get its browser ready for various form factors. Just yesterday, we reported that future versions of Chrome will future GPU Acceleration that will enable it to do heavy duty computing (like scaling videos) with ease. Now DownloadSquad has discovered that speech recognition has been enabled in the latest Chromium builds. Of course, Chrome isn’t the first browser to get voice recognition. Opera received voice navigation support as far back as 2005 with Opera 8. However, this feature works only on Opera for Windows, and since its initial release there has been very little further improvement.

Google has also uncorked a few other handy features in Chrome, including support for device orientation and Google Labs. The former is an essential feature for netbooks, tablets and other accelerometer enabled devices. The latter on the other hand will enable curious users to get a taste of the latest features being cooked up by Google. To access it simply type about:labs in the omnibar (address bar). For now, Windows users can enjoy tabs on the left, while Mac users can play around with Google’s implementation of Tab Expose.

Playing video on an Android device can sometimes be a bit of a chore. The platform’s native media framework has very limited support for mainstream formats and can really only play H.264 video that is in an MP4 or 3GP container. If you are using an mkv container or your video is encoded with wmv or xvid, it isn’t going to play unless you reencode it or use a third-party video player that doesn’t rely on Android’s media framework.

After testing a number of third-party players, I finally found one called RockPlayer that performs relatively well and handles a broad enough selection of formats to satisfy my needs. Created by Chinese mobile software vendor Redirect Intelligence, it uses the excellent open source FFmpeg library to handle video decoding.

The free version of the program is fully-functional, but ad-supported. The advertisements will only show up when the playback controls are active. This means that you will sometimes see ads at the bottom of the screen when you are seeking, for example, but not while you are simply watching a video. It will also display a little red RockPlayer logo in the top left-hand corner at all times, including during regular playback. Users can remove the ads and the persistent logo if they pay $9.99 to upgrade to the full version.

When you launch RockPlayer, the program will show you a simple file manager interface that you can use to navigate to the video files that you have stored on your device’s SD card. When you select a video in the built-in file manager, it will start playing.

You can tap the screen to toggle the visibility of the playback controls, which include a play/pause button, a seek slider, fast-forward and rewind buttons, a button that will optionally stretch the video to fill the screen, and a button to display information about the file that is currently playing. When the controls are visible, the current time and the percentage of remaining battery life will show up in the top right-hand corner.

RockPlayer is simple and predictable. It will handle pretty much anything that is supported by FFmpeg and it offers reasonable playback performance on standard-definition content, without the stuttering that I have experienced in some of the alternatives. It didn’t fare particularly well with a 1080p clip, however. The $9.99 asking price for full activation is a little bit too much, but I’m pretty satisfied to use the free version with the logo. One free alternative that looks promising is arcMedia, but it’s not quite as mature yet. For now, I think that RockPlayer is best choice for xvid and mkv support.

In what has to be one of mobile tech’s more extreme ironies, users of Microsoft’s Hotmail email service have been suffering without proper Exchange support on most mobile devices for some time while Google has been offering ActiveSync for months now. Hotmail users haven’t even able to use proper IMAP for syncing folders and read status.

That indignity will soon end, CNET reports, as Exchange ActiveSync will finally be available next week for Hotmail users.

What does this mean for you? Well – mainly it means that if you’re a Hotmail user you will be able to re-set-up your email account as an Exchange account and get the benefits that brings: push email, sync’d read / unread / deleted statuses, folders, and the like.

Mozilla program manager Mike Beltzner noted that the next version of the open-source browser, currently in beta, is not working on PowerPC machines now and the update will not be automatically offered to them.

Computerworld points to two separate technologies in FF4 that are standing in the way of a PPC build: the OOPP isolated plugin system, which prevents browser extensions from gumming up the works; and the JIT (just in time) compiler for the new JaegerMonkey JavaScript engine, which sounds like a drunken simian but is actually supposed to speed up JavaScript compilation manyfold. Neither have a functional equivalent on the PowerPC.

It’s not clear if the Camino browser, which does work on both Mac processor platforms and is based on the Mozilla Gecko rendering engine, will be able to update to the Gecko 2.0 platform that powers Firefox 4. In the same message thread, Beltzner allowed that developers could certainly work on a PPC version that left out the two problematic components, but that it most likely would not be allowed to carry the Firefox brand (which has happened before with custom optimized builds for specific architectures). He also pointed out that there aren’t development resources within Mozilla to extend support for OOPP and the JIT compiler to PPC, and that outside help has not been forthcoming.

Motorola’s Accompli 009, the very-hyped follow up to their Timeport P935, mostly failed to gain traction, and lived a pretty short life. Available in the US at a full retail price of $599 with service from Cingular, almost non-functional email support, and a confusing form factor, it’s not exactly hard to imagine why the phone didn’t really take off. Some of our fondest memories using the Accompli 009? Well, you had to use a headset to talk on the phone, there was an actual speakerphone attachment about 1/3 of the size of the actual device that plugged into the side, but that color screen… it made up for all of it. Plus, we’ll never forget playing a full-game of Battleship with a friend OTA — it was game changing at the time. I remember having a silver one… before public release of course. The device also made a cameo in the box office hit XXX with Vin Diesel (pictured above). Were you part of the Accompli 009 club?

BGR Throwback Thursday is a weekly series covering our (and your) favorite gadgets, games, and software of yesterday and yesteryear.
